A Hand Up - Not a Hand Out

Habitat for Humanity has been partnering with hard-working families to create homeownership since 1976 and yet so many people still don't fully understand how we do this. Our name is very familiar and is actually one of the most recognized brands in the world, but we feel it's important to explain that we don't give away homes...we help people buy homes. Here's how it works.

We call it a "hand up not a hand out" and that is exactly what it is. Our partner families meet these criteria for ownership:
  1. Currently living in sub-standard conditions

  2. Ability to pay back a zero interest loan (our partner families total household income is less than the average median income)

  3. Willingness to put in at least 500 hours of "sweat equity" build time on the family's home and their neighbors' homes

If you think you would qualify or perhaps you know someone who may qualify, we urge you to visit our website and find out about our application process. We have helped over 230 families buy homes in Los Angeles and they all thought it was a longshot, but they went for it anyway and now they are home.

Thanks to our partners, sponsors, volunteers, donors and the spirit of our families, homeowership is a dream that can come true.
