Guest Blog from Rebecca Waer, Habitat for Humanity Volunteer
Habitat for Humanity really saved more than just Gertrude's roof two weeks ago. I moved to L.A. last November, and have been out of work since late March. Since then I've sat at the computer pretty much every day, 7-8 hrs/day, hunting for jobs, writing mountains of cover letters and changing resumes, making calls, networking...to no avail. It was such a powerless and frustrating feeling. And while many people I've talked with in the TV/film industry have experienced the same thing this year, it still felt horrible - I really was nearly at my wit's end.
I didn't know anyone who had volunteered for Habitat, but I had wanted to do so for a long time, and decided the only thing that would make things better was to get out of my head and my selfishness, and help someone else. I signed up to volunteer with Habitat’s A Brush With Kindness program, which provides home repairs to low-income homeowners at no cost. Habitat got me up early, out the door, and out into a part of L.A. I'd never been, to meet beautiful people I never would have met without this opportunity. Pulling and pounding nails, being showered with termite waste while tearing-out rotting wood, climbing ladders to walk around on a roof higher than I would ever wish to be (and conquering the fear of being up there!), was sincerely the best medicine. And the homemade tuna sandwiches and taco salads made by Gertrude and her mother, savored with the crew (while sitting on folding chairs and buckets) in the shade of the plum tree were like manna from heaven in the heat of the day.
I will always, always sing the praises of Habitat for Humanity, and will continue to volunteer and encourage others to volunteer, as well. Habitat for Humanity really helps everyone - those with physical needs - i.e. a new rooftop or entire house, and those who may need a lift from the inside out (volunteers and homeowners alike). You guys are doing great work. Thanks again.

Grammy Award Winning Artists Wisin & Yandel Spread Habitat For Humanity Love On Their "La Revolucion" Tour
Not too long ago Wisin & Yandel, who have been wracking up the Grammy Awards and are nominated for an MTV Music Video Award, came out to build with us in Downey alongside the Monroy family before gearing up for their "La Revolucion" U.S. Tour.
The build-day was just one way in a long list of ways that the talented, duo is helping deserving families all across the U.S. in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Today, beginning at noon (EDT), they are auctioning off VIP Tour Experiences at http://www.charitybuzz.com/wyy. The auction winners have a lot to look forward to - including meeting Wisin & Yandel, VIP tickets in the first five rows and a VIP swag bag! Not only that, the proceeds will benefit the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate in each city on the tour. Fans are encouraged to bid on the September 17th through October 10th dates beginning today and the October 16th through October 25th dates beginning September 9th. C'mon you know you're going - might as well go VIP style for an excellent cause.
The pair, who supports Habitat for Humanity because they believe a home provides hope and a stronger sense of family and community - three factors essential to succeeding in life, also plans to donate $1 for each concert ticket sold and proceeds from special merchandise to the local Habitat affiliate in each city along the way. A video featuring the duo out and about building with partner families and volunteers will air before each concert and Habitat homeowners will also be invited to take in the shows at every stop on tour. The guys will also be trading in microphones for hammers and sold-out arenas for Habitat build-sites while on tour.
We at Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity of Greater L.A. are thrilled to be working with such amazing performers and all-around generous guys who are using their "La Revolucion" tour to spread the word and start a revolution in affordable housing!

This is my friend Sara Nelson who engaged in a battle with breast cancer. Her story is amazing & inspiring… When she shared her photo journal of her journey with breast cancer on her facebook page, I don’t know exactly why it hit me so hard but seeing this photo of her at her first post-operative chemo treatment with her hair cut short (she had beautiful blonde hair nearly to her waist), dyed pink in solidarity with other women fighting breast cancer & sporting the Power Women, Power Tools t-shirt I had given her at some point … I fell apart & sat sobbing for a good 10 minutes or more. Oh yea, it was also the afternoon of the Fernwood Homes Dedication.
Anyway – what hit me is that we usually never know how a simple little gesture can be so inspiring and meaningful to others. Sara said she wore her pink and black HFHFH PWPT t-shirt A LOT in her battle because the breast cancer “colors” are pink & black. SHE is truly a POWER WOMAN!!
Today, Sara is cancer-free & invests a lot of her time encouraging & inspiring other women in their breast cancer battle.
